Sun Gum Saan translates as New Gold Mountain, the sobriquet the early Cantonese Chinese goldminers used for New Zealand.
Sun Gum Saan Ltd is a charitable company set up by the Dunedin Chinese Gardens Trust and the NZ Chinese Association Otago Southland Branch. Our Kaupapa is the development of class lessons for years 1 to 10 to assist teachers with the telling of local histories under the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum being rolled out by the Ministry of Education.
Currently, we have developed class units and lessons for years 1 to 8 and our work will be launched at the Chinese New Year celebrations on Sunday 29 January 2023 at the Lawrence Chinese Camp.
The lessons have been peer reviewed and refereed by a Chinese cultural advisor associated with the New Zealand Chinese Association and an education professional. These lessons will be trialled at two area schools in Otago after which it is proposed they will be available to schools later in 2023.
This is a social enterprise model so there will be a small charge for their use which will enable ongoing work and new lessons to be developed.
